Ring tone volume issue

Sorry if you discussed this already, I am new. The only ringtones that I can hear are factory installed. Any free or purchased ones the volume is so low I can not hear them from 2 feet away. My old phone I could hear 2 rooms away. Can anyone help me with this issue? verizon said there is a software update to correct this but they also said my version is upto date?
